Installation / Interior Renovation -- New York, NY -- Complete
Pod Design was selected to design a space based on a Showtime television show. The resulting design was inspired by dissociative identity disorder and schizophrenia, the primary focus of the Showtime program “The United States of Tara.” The penthouse and Roof spaces of the Cassa NY building are transformed into interior spaces and exterior spaces, inverting traditional notions of stability of both space and, by adding both interactive video and wireless headphones, time. The interior space was fabricated with modular, CNC-milled plywood that looks both like the interior of the brain as well as an audio waveform. Then, an interactive video wall, where Tara’s 3 personality-shifting characters tracked viewer’s faces and bodies, made inverse surveillance between the penthouse and roof deck spaces using a proprietary video switcher. In addition, an audio work called “Voices in my Head” was created. This work is heard via wireless headphones, giving the spectator a chance to wander through the spaces while audibly removed from the surrounding environment. This further creates a sense of disorientation and instability.
